One of my favorite parts of planning a wedding was visiting a small bridal consignment shop that sold vintage gowns. The owner was a delight- downright hilarious, actually- and her excitement for each dress' story was contagious.
After narrowing down my choices, she explained that a seamstress could skillfully alter a dress of my choice to fit me. I eventually found "The Dress" at another shop, but the experience sticks with me. I highly recommend spending a day visiting bridal/consignment shops, if you are shopping for a wedding gown!
Not only are many vintage pieces incredibly beautiful, there is the sustainability of reusing (instead of disposing of them or purchasing something new).
Etsy also offers vintage bridal finds (for dresses, accessories, and rings). Reusing a family heirloom piece or purchasing vintage jewelry can be a way of choosing simplicity. Ethical Weddings offers a list of vendors for fair trade diamonds, among other choices.
Whether your dress was new or used, consider checking out Recycled Bride (for purchase or sale). There are also charities that accept wedding dress donations.
When sending invitations, consider a postcard for RSVPs or your thank you cards. (You save on postage and paper!) Vistaprint offers some frugal and attractive preprinted recycled paper postcards.
This couple created an online photo account for guests to upload their photos, and creatively informed their guests. What a simple idea for sharing photos of your celebration!
In lieu of frivolous wedding favors, this couple eloquently shared their choice to sponsor children through Compassion instead. (I love this idea!)
I'd love to hear about your wedding! Did you choose simplicity & sustainability? What are your suggestions?
