Baby Essentials (or Not): Baby Powder

I've mentioned my thoughts on baby powder before, so I won't get too redundant. (Basically, it can be an often over-used non-necessity.)

But there are times when a little powder may be called for, in caring for a little one. I like to keep some on hand for those hot summer days to dab underneath those cute little rolls/skin folds. A small amount underneath baby's neck or arms, can help prevent the "heat/moisture rash" that sweaty, drooling little babies are often susceptible to developing. Since we're expecting a summertime baby soon, I decided to make up a batch, using bulk herbs that I had on hand!

An herbal powder is a healthy alternative to the commercial baby powders that are widely available. Natural baby powders are available (such as Country Comfort), but making your own is quite simple. Certain herbs can help deter fungal infections, as well as offer skin-soothing properties.

Here is my homemade herbal baby powder recipe:
Homemade Herbal Baby Powder
1/2 Tbl. Comfrey Leaf Powder
1/2 Tbl. Chamomile Powder
1/2 Tbl. Calendula Powder
1/2 Tbl. Plantain Powder
2 Tbl. Arrowroot Powder

If you have a small food/coffee grinder on hand, you can grind dried herbal leaves/flowers into powder, if needed. Mix all ingredients together well, and sift through a finely-meshed strainer. Pour into a jar and label. (I repurposed a spice shaker jar, which is perfect for sprinkling out a small amount.) Shake well before each use. (Remember, you don't have to limit your usage of this powder just for the baby; feel free to dash some on yourself as well!)

  1. I know this may sound silly but it's what my Grandmother and mom used, potato starch. It's what they use in Finland (where my Grandmother immigrated from). One of my girls has had one diaper rash and a little potato starch was all it took and it was gone. Blessings on you and your little one to come.
