Gratituesday: A Miracle

(How God Was Great in 2008)

This week, for Gratituesday, Laura is encouraging us to focus on God's goodness over the past year.  (And He is good; all the time!)
"I will meditate on all your works
and consider all your mighty deeds.
Your ways, O God, are holy.
What god is so great as our God?
You are the God who performs miracles;
you display your power among the peoples."
Psalm 77:12-14
This past month, as a family, we have been reflecting on God's goodness to us.  He has faithfully blessed us with His refiner's fire; nourishing us with His healing hand both spiritually and physically.  God has helped tear down "walls" in our hearts, and draw us closer to Him in steps of faith.  He has has walked us through some incredible challenges.

He has also provided us with much-needed insight toward nourishing our family's dietary/health needs.  From the straight-forward research of Nourishing Traditions, to the incredible answers of my auto-immune symptoms (with celiac), God has brought so much health to our home.

But right now, we are overwhelmingly thankful for a new miracle in our lives: I am pregnant! We have such gratitude for this little soul that God has blessed us with, and we prayerfully hope that with His gracious provision, we will be able to hold this little life in August 2009.
If you read my earlier post, you will know that Gen has been asking for a baby brother or sister for quite some time now, actually.  I've always told her that we need to pray and ask God for one.  I guess she did.  (So, here's the answer to the question- she didn't receive anything on that list, except for the baby. But there was my birthday cake, which I was too nauseous to eat.)

We were amazed that after only four months on a gluten-free diet, pregnancy was possible. Over the summer, I focused on nourishing chicken stocks, coconut milk recipes, and other healing foods, such as buckwheat for breakfast (based on recommendations from the Weston A. Price Foundation).

As I recovered, I have gradually been able to add cultured cheeses and raw milk back into my diet (although I still have difficulty with some foods, such as brassica vegetables, i.e. broccoli). I had read that the recovery (in preparation for pregnancy) ironically averages about 9 months, so I was not even considering this as a possibility for much longer.  God is amazing.

Shauna at The Gluten-Free Girl, wrote a beautiful post regarding her pregnancy earlier this year, and it describes our emotions (as well as my food cravings!) in a very similar sense.  (No sweets, but pass the meats, please.)

Nausea and exhaustion has hit me quite hard, so I've been doing pretty much nothing but "gestating and resting" this past month. :)  The apples have not been canned into applesauce, Calvin has done most of the meal prep/clean-up, and I have barely skimmed the surfaces in an attempt to clean.  (Thanks, sweetie.)  Christmas was quiet.  Even doing the weekly meal plans has been rather nauseating (looking at those recipes!).

I've read stacks of books with Gen, as she cuddles up on the futon next to me. We've done lessons on colors and counting, in between my times of "resting my eyes." She has adjusted amazingly well to having Mama in bed, actually, and at times, has encouraged me to rest, when she catches me putting away laundry or sweeping the floor.  ("Night Night, Mama," she says, as she pulls me to a nest of blankets & pillows by her bed.)  About a week ago, I was putting away laundry in her room, and she ran up to me, threw her arms around my knees in a tight hug, and said "Thank you, Mama!"  Overall, though, pregnancy while parenting a passionate toddler is certainly challenging.

We have been so blessed to have the encouragement and wisdom of friends who know the deep grief of loss, along with the joy of welcoming God's blessings.  They have encouraged us to live hopefully, and to not be afraid to dream.  So we do.  It is a conscious choice to live in hope.  We know that God tells us not to worry about the days to come; they are in His hands.  Our God has not given us a spirit of fear, and we know that no matter what, He is always with us, and is always good.
"For I am the LORD, your God,
who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, Do not fear;
I will help you."
Isaiah 41:13
By the way, if any of you local ladies have maternity clothes lying about that you would be willing to loan me, it would be much appreciated. I am shocked at how quickly I am widening! Perhaps it's all those midnight snacks. :) Also, if any of you have frugal tips for maternity wear/nursing bras, etc, I would be truly blessed if you would share!  Feel free to e-mail me, if you'd rather, at paisleysister [at] yahoo.com.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! That is so very exciting. Gen is going to be a great big sister! If you ever want to drop her off here for a few hours so you can "rest your eyes" I would love to have her. I was very very sick with my last baby and I know how hard it can be to keep up with the little people when all your body wants to do is sleep.... so please let me know if I can help.
I will be praying for God to grow and protect this precious new life. Congratulations again.

Amy @ Finer Things December 30, 2008 6:19 AM

Oh, Michele. I've never been so happy with a very tentative CORRECT guess!!!

I cried when I skimmed your entry. There is something about infertility (ours was three years) that tends to bond mamas. SO VERY HAPPY FOR YOU!

Now, I need to go back and read the details. ;-) CONGRATULATIONS!

Michele! I'm so excited for you! What a wonderful blessing. How INCREDIBLE that eating a certain way was what was needed! I agree with Katie, I wish you were close enough for our walks when we start up again! I would offer you some maternity clothes, but it seems that I will be needing them since I'm due in August too! (But I've only announced to family so far) Congratulations! What a lucky little girl Gen is. :)

Sarah December 30, 2008 11:51 AM

Congratulations Michele! that's great news!

mommustwrite December 30, 2008 11:57 AM

Congratulations; what a wonderful Christmas present!

I bought larger-sized regular clothes at thrift stores for the first half of my pregnancies, mainly because I had a hard time finding used maternity clothes I liked. Children's consignments stores sometimes have maternity clothes, too, though, so you may want to check those out.

I have friends who would wear longer, tunic-style tops over their pre-pregnancy jeans for the growing-but-not-showing period -- they just tied ribbon or something elastic-y between the button and the button hole.

And lastly -- you can start now making nursing pads! You can make your own pattern pretty easily just by looking at the reusable ones sold in stores. You'll want to use an absorbant material like what would be next to the skin in a cloth diaper.

Congrats again!

simplenaturalnourishing December 30, 2008 1:20 PM

Congratulations! What a wonderful blessing. I don't know what your thoughts are on a homebirthing, but it is so worth looking into. I have had two and they have been so wonderful. Midwives are such a blessing!

Jennifer December 30, 2008 1:52 PM

Oh my goodness. You and your family (and that new little life) will most certainly be in my prayers. I am so happy for you. :)

Oh Michele! I am beyond thrilled for you. What an incredible blessing. I will be praying faithfully each and every day for your continued health and the health of this new little one.

I'm just so happy for you, Calvin and Gen. :)

What size maternity clothes do you need? I have some of every size packed away and I'd be honored to send some to you if you could use them.

lizzykristine @ Uplifted Eyes December 30, 2008 3:02 PM

How wonderful! I'm so excited for you. :)

I've been very reluctant to try gluten-free life -- we're starting a short stint in January -- but you just gave me some extra motivation.... ;)

Michele @ Frugal Granola December 30, 2008 3:05 PM

Shannon-
I will share more about our birthing plans later on. But yes, I at this point, I am working with a team of home waterbirth midwives. :)

Thanks!
Michele

Sharon December 30, 2008 3:37 PM

Oh Michele, Calvin and Gen, I am so excited for you all :)

Our God is in deed so awesome in all His ways :)

Isn't it amazing how the Creator of the universe has withheld the birthing of your biological child until now. If He had not . . . would you have received this child named Gen into your hearts? She is such a jewel and a joy :)

Only you and Calvin really know how tough the road to get to this point has been and yes, there is a bit to go, I stand amazed at the way our Father works-the word amazing just doesn't seem to be a strong enough descriptive word but He Is-and I can hardly wait to see and hear all about the intricute plans He has for all of you :) So please keep us updated as you are able :) Your post's are a healing balm to our heart's :)

May the blessings of Christ's presence continue to surround all four of you as you dance through this new adventure hand in hand with the One who is at work within you :)

Love always,
Sharon
PS I know a certain Grandmother who is probably glowing all over the place :)

Michele @ Frugal Granola December 30, 2008 4:19 PM

Sharon-
In answer to your question, I believe, Yes, we would still have Gen. Adopting her is a dream come true. :) We're so excited for her to have a sibling.

Thank you so much! Hopefully we'll be able to see you this spring.
Blessings,
Michele :)

Stephanie @ Keeper of the Home December 31, 2008 5:15 PM

Oh Michele, I am just so excited for you!!! When I read the title "A Miracle", I immediately thought, "Could she be pregnant?". Wow, wow, wow. God is so incredibly good, isn't He?

And yes, parenting a toddler while pregnant is certainly challenging (I remember having my own 2 year old, plus watching a 1 year old and 1 1/2 year old part time during my first trimester with Caden- I considered it a good day if all the kids were fed and had clean bums!). God will continue to give you the grace, and one thing that's nice about a toddler Gen's age is that they have at least a small level of understanding and compassion. :)

Blessings on you and this sweet little one! Yay!!!

Jennifer December 31, 2008 7:19 PM

congratulations!!

I just have to tell you that your blog here and the entries you create are a blessing to me. I am so glad I found this link on Twitter. Have a wonderful day!

Niina January 1, 2009 6:46 AM

Michelle-
Such wonderful news. There truly is nothing more precious than feeling that life grow inside you. I am so excited for you. You will be in my prayers as you and your family walk through this amazing adventure.
So excited to see that you are working with a midwife. I had both my girls naturally using the Bradly method. We were so please with all we learned and how wonderful it was to have out of hospital, noninvasive births.
In regards to maternity clothes. Check jcpenny.com. Also, shadeclothing.com was selling some maternity tops on clearence for 2.99. Simple and modest. Old Navy often has items for under $5 on clearance if you catch them at the right time. I think you are probably a lot smaller than I am or you could borrow what I have. Will keep my eyes open for deals and let you know if I come across any.
Blessings to you and your family, Niina
ps thank you for your encouraging weekly post. they are a blessing to me and lift my soul.

Katie January 1, 2009 3:34 PM

Michele,
Congratulations!! I'm due just a month before you in July. I'm so excited for you! I too am in the "resting and gestating" (and feeling nauseous) phase of things, and have set up a second blog (lifeafterbirthcontrol.blogspot.com) to chronicle our journey, what works for us, etc. For both maternity and baby things, are you a member of Freecycle? We started snapping them up as soon as we found out I was pregnant and have already been blessed with a ton of maternity clothes, a jogging stroller, a bouncy seat, and many other baby things--all from people who are happy to see them go to good use. Hang in there, you will feel better and we're all so happy for you!

Rachael January 1, 2009 3:37 PM

That is too amazing for words! If I wasn't expecting as well I would definitely give you some maternity clothes! I am so excited for you and your family!!!

Michele @ Frugal Granola January 1, 2009 3:47 PM

Katie-
Yes, we are part of freecycle (see the link on the sidebar of my blog). :) But haven't seen anything maternity in my size come up, yet. :)

Melanie (MST),  January 1, 2009 5:14 PM

Hurray! I am so happy for you! We have been struggling through infertility for 3 years and your news gives me hope, especially since you have been trying to eat better and that is what I have been doing too. Do you have some info I could refer too online? Congratulations! What a happy gift! We'll be praying for you! :)

Heath Clan January 1, 2009 5:39 PM

I am sooooo happy for you!!!
Prayers for all of you.

I will look at Laura's for you. She has a whole rack of maternity clothes for free at her place. Either that or I will rope Rebecca into it. I am still kind of dragging. Rebecca has to go see her all the time:)

With the nausea and tiredness-make some snacks that you can eat, high in protein and eat them every two hours. It helps. I used to make a sandwich in the morning and cut it in fourths and then snack on that. I am so glad to hear that you are nauseaus! That is such a great sign. It is a bummer to exist through, but I am always so glad when I get sick.

Michele @ Frugal Granola January 1, 2009 7:26 PM

Melanie-
It's great to hear from you again! :) I think I'll probably end up doing a post on this topic, since we were "diagnosed" with both male factor infertility & my "unexplained" miscarriages/infertility.

In the meantime, check out the links in my "healthy family resources" bar. I highly recommend the Brewer Diet and the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Also, much more importantly, is placing our fertility in God's hands, and seeking to be content with His will, whether it means children or not. (Difficult, certainly!) Check out this Above Rubies article that really encouraged us in our prayerfulness: Protect Your Womb

Blessings,
Michele

Melanie,  January 1, 2009 8:32 PM

Thanks so much Michele! I read your blog all the time and I am on the Weston A Price website all the time and have the book, Nourishing Traditions, but I've not heard of the Brewer diet. I'll check it out. Thanks for the article, I'll read it soon. Oh what treasures God has taught us in the difficult road. I am so thankful for that no matter what happens. :) Blessings to you too!

Robin January 1, 2009 10:51 PM

I came to your blog off a friend's blog. I will forward your blog to my dear sister-in-law, who is also glueten intollerant. Inferility is a fear of hers, perhaps your blog will help her!
Thanks!

Jenn January 6, 2009 2:18 AM

Congratulations!! I too am pregnant after infertility. I would love to hear more about your homebirth plans as I am also planning one for May.
All the best for a healthy pregnancy and I hope the nausea goes away soon!

Tiffany February 27, 2009 1:03 PM

I told you I am behind--- I missed this post. I think I read the ones just previous then missed this huge beautiful announcement! Congratulations. I am so happy for you. I sold my maternity clothes at the Pass It On sale. I am sure you can find some good deals soon as it is coming up. I am sorry you are nauseous. That is something I deal with severely (IV's, etc. for 3-6 months) each time. Yet I did it six times so it must be worth it! Blessings!
